A 17,000-year-old Colombian mammoth, found far north of typical range, is being excavated in Washington state.
A prehistoric Colombian mammoth, estimated to be about 40 years old and likely died 17,000 years ago during an Ice Age flood, is being excavated at the McBones Coyote Canyon Mammoth Site in eastern Washington.
Discovered in 1999 and studied since 2008, the site is now open to the public with guided tours during spring and early summer, offering views of the dig, bone lab, and museum exhibits.
The find is notable for being farther north than typical for the species.
