Two Nigerian men sentenced to 40+ years for sextortion that caused an Australian teen’s suicide, marking first successful overseas prosecution.
Two Nigerian men, aged 25 and 29, were sentenced to over 40 years in prison by a Nigerian court for their role in a sextortion scheme that contributed to the suicide of a New South Wales teen, marking Australia’s first successful prosecution of online scammers abroad.
The teen, whose identity is protected, was deceived into sending explicit images after being contacted by a fake female profile.
The scammer demanded $500 in gift cards and threatened to distribute the photos.
NSW Police, the AFP, and international partners traced the suspects to a Lagos slum, leading to their arrest in March 2024 and conviction two years later.
The case highlights a 1332% rise in sextortion reports since 2018-19, with offenders often escalating demands to extreme content.
