Ontario has ended its 2019 tuition freeze, allowing colleges and universities to raise tuition by up to 2% annually for three years, then capping increases at the lower of 2% or three-year inflation average.
The move, part of a $6.4 billion four-year funding plan, aims to improve financial sustainability, support 70,000 new in-demand program seats, and strengthen rural, northern, Indigenous, and French-language institutions.
The change follows financial strain from a federal cap on international student visas and reduced revenue.
Georgian College welcomed the funding, though it continues assessing impacts from campus consolidations.
Ontario also revised OSAP, limiting grants to 25% of public college funding and eliminating them for private career colleges.
