A NZ$5.1 million grant launches a Pacific-led effort to eliminate cervical cancer in the Cook Islands and Niue by boosting HPV vaccination, self-testing, and treatment.
A NZ$5.1 million grant from the Matariki Fund, administered by former Prime Minister Dame Jacinda Ardern, is launching a Pacific-led initiative to eliminate cervical cancer, starting in the Cook Islands and Niue.
Led by the University of Auckland’s Centre for Pacific and Global Health, the program aims to achieve WHO’s 90-70-90 targets by 2030—90% of girls vaccinated, 70% of women screened by ages 35 and 45, and 90% of cases treated—through expanded HPV vaccination, cervical self-testing, and improved diagnosis and care.
The effort strengthens regional health systems, promotes Pacific women’s leadership, and builds on existing programs to reduce duplication and ensure equitable access to life-saving interventions.
Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of cancer death among Pacific women, with rates up to nine times higher than in Australasia.
