On March 5, 2026, a diver and two boat occupants were rescued off Wellington’s South Coast after their 5.4-meter runabout was swept out to sea by gale-force winds up to 88 km/h and waves reaching 2 meters.
The skipper, who had been scuba diving, swam to a remote shore and was airlifted to safety by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
The stranded boat was located about 6 kilometers offshore by the Police Launch Lady Elizabeth IV, and a crew member used a tender to take control and navigate it back to Owhiro Bay.
All three individuals were unharmed but shaken.
Authorities stressed the importance of waterproof communication devices, emergency training, and preparation, especially for inexperienced boaters, amid rapidly changing maritime conditions.
