Ireland spent nearly €2.7 million in 2025 destroying seized illegal goods, with over 90% of costs tied to nitrous oxide canisters, a growing public concern.
Expenses included €2.05 million for destroying more than 35,000 kilograms of the gas, €427,000 for storage, and €95,000 for shredding tobacco.
Authorities also seized large quantities of narcotics, including cannabis, cocaine, heroin, and amphetamines, along with millions of cigarettes, tonnes of tobacco, and hundreds of thousands of litres of smuggled alcohol.
Cash, weapons, and items linked to endangered species were also confiscated.
Revenue highlighted ongoing efforts to combat smuggling using advanced analytics, detection technologies, and international cooperation.
