Cuba’s main power plant repaired after blackout; only 1,000 MW online, below demand.
Cuban officials confirmed repairs are complete at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant, a key facility that triggered a major blackout across western Cuba earlier in the week.
The outage, caused by a broken boiler, stemmed from the island’s aging grid and ongoing fuel shortages, worsened by disrupted oil shipments from Venezuela following a U.S. military action in January.
Though the plant is expected to resume operations by Saturday, only 1,000 megawatts of power are currently available—below national demand—leaving many without electricity.
