Crestview eighth grader Caitlin Clonch, 14, won the 2026 Columbiana County Spelling Bee by spelling "Gemini" correctly in the 12th round, becoming the first student from her school to win since 1990.
She will represent the county at the 101st Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., from May 26 to 28, earning a six-night stay at the JW Marriott with a parent and subscriptions to several educational resources for her school.
Clonch defeated East Liverpool students Crystal Colon and Brandon Armstrong, who placed first and second runner-up.
She had not studied for the bee and is the oldest of four siblings and a writer for her school’s newspaper.
The event was co-sponsored by local media and educational organizations.
