China warns Japan: past actions and remarks on Taiwan threaten bilateral relations.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated on March 8, 2026, that the future of China-Japan relations hinges on Japan’s choices, urging Tokyo to reflect on its wartime past, including its invasion and colonial rule of Taiwan.
He criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s remarks equating a Taiwan crisis with a survival threat to Japan and justifying collective self-defense, calling such statements irresponsible and reminiscent of historical militarist rhetoric.
Wang emphasized that Taiwan is China’s core interest, reaffirmed China’s opposition to any attempts to overturn historical judgments on aggression, and warned that interference in Taiwan would harm bilateral ties.
