A 59-year-old woman from Assam’s Cachar district, Depali Das, has become the first person declared a foreigner and detained in a government center to receive Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
She was declared an illegal migrant in 2019 after a case dating back to 2013, based on her entry into India from Bangladesh after March 1971.
Detained in Silchar for nearly two years, she was released on bail in 2021 following a Supreme Court order.
Applying under the CAA in February 2025, she was granted citizenship on March 6, 2026, after verification of her pre-2015 arrival and Hindu religious background.
Her three Indian-born children may now use her citizenship status as proof of their nationality.
