New York Governor Hochul met with Trump’s border czar, blocking federal immigration raids without her consent and demanding action on a refugee’s death and detained students.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul met with President Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, in Albany, confirming that the federal government will not conduct large-scale immigration enforcement operations in the state without her approval.
She urged Homan to avoid establishing new large-scale detention centers, citing widespread public anxiety, and expressed concern about the death of Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a Rohingya refugee discovered dead in Buffalo after being released by Border Patrol.
Hochul requested that the federal government issue visas to Shah Alam's family in Myanmar for reunification and release detained foreign students.
The meeting, which was held without protests, had a more relaxed tone than Homan's visit in 2025, though his office and the Department of Homeland Security declined to comment.
