Marie man was fined $3,000 and banned from fishing for a year after being convicted of multiple ice-fishing violations in Ontario’s Fisheries Management Zone 10.
Benjamin Halcrow placed an unregistered ice fishing hut on Upper Island Lake in January 2025, failing to remove it by the March 31 deadline.
The structure sank into the ice over winter and was later cut free by concerned residents in mid-April to prevent it from falling into the lake.
Authorities confirmed the hut was not registered and violated provincial rules requiring registration and removal of large non-fabric huts or tents in designated zones.
