Maine responded to a federal probe into $45M in alleged improper autism Medicaid payments, with Gov. Mills calling it politically driven and vowing legal action if funds are cut.
Maine Governor Janet Mills confirmed the state submitted a detailed response to a federal request from CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz regarding MaineCare, the state’s Medicaid program, following a watchdog report that flagged $45 million in potential improper payments for autism services.
Mills called the inquiry politically motivated, accusing the Trump administration of using fraud allegations to pressure Democratic-led states and possibly withhold federal funds.
She emphasized Maine’s strong oversight, including a Program Integrity Unit that identified over $37.5 million in overpayments and issued 290 violation notices since 2021, and pledged to challenge any funding cuts in court to protect healthcare access for nearly 400,000 residents.
The CMS did not comment on the state’s response.
