Los Angeles County broke ground on a $65 million mental health campus at the historic Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, funded by California’s 2024 Proposition 1.
The project will convert six vacant buildings into a facility with 162 beds, including 32 for young adults in crisis, 70 interim housing units with mental health services, and 60 permanent supportive housing units for adults with serious mental illness.
A shared community space will serve all residents.
Interim housing is set for completion by late 2027, with psychiatric beds opening in early 2028.
The county secured a 13-acre lease from the state, supported by Governor Newsom and Senator Archuleta, to repurpose the 162-acre site, preserving its history while addressing regional mental health and homelessness crises.
