Kenya’s Monica Juma named UN drug chief, succeeding Egypt’s Ghada Waly.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Kenya’s Monica Kathina Juma as the new executive director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and head of the UN Office at Vienna, succeeding Egypt’s Ghada Fathi Waly.
Juma, Kenya’s national security adviser, will take office after a transition period during which John Brandolino of the UNODC will serve as acting director.
The appointment, announced on March 6, 2026, reflects the UN’s commitment to strengthening global efforts against drug trafficking, crime, and illicit financial flows.
