The attack occurred on June 17, 1994, when Ingersoll entered the victim’s home through an unlocked back door, assaulted her at knifepoint while she slept, and fled after she escaped through a window.
A sexual assault kit collected at the time was retested using forensic genetic genealogy, leading to his arrest in 2023.
The case was reopened in 2018, and Ingersoll was also connected to a separate South Carolina assault.
He received a life sentence for rape and an additional 25 years for burglary, with a 30-year sex offender registration requirement if ever released.
