Former Seattle tech CFO sentenced to 2 years in prison for diverting $35M to crypto, causing mass layoffs.
Nevin Shetty, former CFO of a Seattle tech startup, was sentenced to two years in prison and three years of supervised release for wire fraud after diverting $35 million in company funds to his cryptocurrency platform, HighTower Treasury, in 2022.
Prosecutors said he violated the company’s investment policy by using the money in high-risk decentralized finance protocols, initially earning $133,000 but losing nearly all value by May 2022 due to the Terra ecosystem collapse.
He concealed the transfers from executives, was convicted after a nine-day trial in November 2025, and ordered to repay $35 million in restitution.
The fraud led to the layoff of 60 employees.
