Five Cumbrian businesses were fined between July and September 2025 for employing individuals without legal right to work in the UK, with penalties ranging from £40,000 to £90,000.
The largest fine, £90,000, went to Raj (Suheb) Ltd, owner of The Raj Indian restaurant in Askam-in Furness.
Others included car washes, a takeaway, and a restaurant in Barrow, Carlisle, and Cleator Moor, each fined £40,000 to £45,000.
The Home Office stated employers can face unlimited fines and up to five years in prison for hiring unauthorized workers, especially when visas are expired, conditions breached, or checks inadequate.
The data was released in February 2026 as part of the quarterly enforcement report.
