The EPA starts a $2M Superfund cleanup in Pennsylvania to remove toxic waste from a former strip mine, nearly 50 years after illegal dumping.
The EPA has begun a $2 million Superfund cleanup at a former strip mine in Jefferson Township, Pennsylvania, nearly 50 years after toxic waste barrels were illegally buried.
The project, starting in April, will target three of 20 suspected dumping sites to excavate hazardous materials, including heavy metals and carcinogens from Koppers Inc. and U.S. Steel, using advanced surveys and digging up to 30 feet deep.
Soil and water testing will assess risks to nearby Scott Run and residential supplies, with interim updates and a final report expected in about two years.
