A Charlotte woman was arrested after hitting a police officer with her car during a parking lot incident, released on a $3,000 bond amid backlash over its low amount.

A 25-year-old Charlotte woman, Tanaezah Michelle Austin, was arrested and released on a $3,000 secured bond after allegedly striking a police officer with her car during an early Sunday morning incident in a commercial parking lot. Officers responded to reports of vehicles doing donuts, and when one officer stepped in front of her black Kia Optima to intervene, she accelerated, causing the officer to roll over the hood and sustain minor injuries. Video of the event circulated online, prompting criticism from law enforcement leaders and public officials who called the bond amount inadequate and a threat to officer safety. Austin, who has prior dismissed misdemeanor charges, is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on March 24. The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office declined to comment.
