A Carterville school employee is on leave amid a sexual abuse investigation sparked by an anonymous tip and a recent victim statement.
A Carterville school employee was placed on administrative leave in February 2026 after the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office launched a criminal investigation into sexual abuse allegations, more than a year after the FBI received an anonymous tip in November 2024.
The tip, which lacked verifiable evidence and involved incidents over a decade prior, was forwarded to local authorities, who initially could not act.
The investigation stalled until a former student provided an on-the-record statement on February 20, prompting officials to notify the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and the school district.
The employee, not charged and unnamed, remains on leave as authorities continue the probe.
Community members said the individual had long been the subject of rumors, and some expressed frustration over the delayed public notification.
The sheriff’s office has received additional tips and believes there may be multiple victims.
