Bangladesh posthumously honors former PM Khaleda Zia as a democracy champion on International Women’s Day.
Former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia of Bangladesh will be posthumously awarded the 'Best Indomitable Woman in Advancing Democracy' on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2026, at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka.
The honor, presented by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, recognizes her leadership in restoring democratic institutions.
Five other women will also be honored in categories including economy, education, motherhood, overcoming adversity, and social development.
The award comes amid concern over women's low political representation, with only 4.24% of candidates in the February 12 parliamentary elections being women and just seven winning seats.
