A worker fired for euthanizing a wounded deer was cleared by a tribunal, which deemed his act compassionate and fair.
Anthony Brown, a 24-year AB Agri employee, was fired in January 2024 for killing a severely injured deer on company grounds using a Stanley knife to end its suffering.
Management claimed the act violated the Deer Act 1991 and damaged the company’s reputation, though they could not specify the violation.
An employment tribunal ruled in February 2026 that the dismissal was unfair, stating Brown acted out of compassion and reasonable judgment, with no company policy against such actions, and that delaying help would have worsened the deer’s pain.
The tribunal found no fault in his conduct, and compensation will be decided later.
