Rising costs caused 38% of respondents to relocate; Gen Z was most impacted, with 51% citing affordability and 64% doubting they'll ever be able to afford their dream city. Cities like Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Buffalo, Detroit, and Indianapolis have the lowest housing costs, while housing continues to be the biggest expense. The highest tax rates are found in New Jersey, Illinois, and Connecticut, while the lowest rates are found in Hawaii, Alabama, and Colorado. Relocating during life transitions can be beneficial, according to financial experts, but managing debt, saving in higher-yielding accounts, and raising credit scores can improve financial health wherever you are.
