The South Carolina House passed a resolution to name a stretch of U.S. 76 in the Upstate “Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway,” citing his advocacy for free speech and conservative principles, following his 2025 death in a violent incident at Utah Valley University.
The bill, which passed 75-31, now moves to the Senate.
It faced strong opposition from Black Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter and Rep. Hamilton Grant, who criticized Kirk’s past remarks on race and gender as divisive and harmful.
The resolution, along with another to name an interstate after Donald Trump, passed along party lines, drawing scrutiny over the appropriateness of honoring figures with controversial records.
