Saskatchewan parents are facing higher daycare fees after the province clarified that only children turning six on or after April 1, 2026, qualify for $10-a-day kindergarten care under a new federal-provincial agreement.
Operators say they were misled into believing all six-year-olds in the 2026–2027 school year would be covered, but funding restrictions prevent retroactive support for those turning six before April 1.
As a result, families of these children now pay full rates ranging from $30 to $85 daily.
The government says reopening the agreement is not feasible, but the opposition is calling for emergency retroactive payments to ease the burden.
