A safety project at a Spokane intersection, funded by local entities and honoring Eva Allen, who died crossing there, includes new lights and a flashing beacon to protect pedestrians.
A pedestrian safety project is underway at the intersection of Hastings Road and Bellwood Drive near Mead High School in Spokane County, following the January death of 20-year-old Eva Allen, who was struck by a school bus while crossing.
The upgrades, costing about $25,000, include enhanced street lighting and a pedestrian-activated flashing beacon, funded by the Mead School District, Fairwood Retirement Village and Assisted Living, and Rob Allen, co-founder of the Fairwood Farmers Market.
Avista Utilities provided the lighting at no cost.
County commissioners support expanding the nearby 20-mph zone and plan a public hearing on the matter.
The changes aim to prevent future accidents and honor Allen’s memory.
