Russia has charged Ruslan Tsalikov, a former first deputy defense minister, with embezzlement, bribery, and leading a criminal group that allegedly stole and laundered state funds from 2017 to 2024.
The 69-year-old, who served under former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, was detained in Moscow and faces up to 20 years in prison.
The case is part of a wider crackdown on corruption within Russia’s military and government, following the removal of Shoigu in May 2024.
The Basmanny District Court will decide on pretrial detention.
