Russia allegedly plans to interfere in Hungary’s 2026 elections to aid Orbán, using disinformation and GRU operatives, EU and NATO say.

According to European intelligence sources, Russia is planning to use GRU-affiliated operatives and social media misinformation to sway Hungary's parliamentary elections in April 2026 in favor of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. It may be doing this from the Russian embassy in Budapest. The initiative seeks to take advantage of Orbán's anti-Ukraine views and is allegedly headed by Kremlin aide Sergei Kiriyenko and connected to previous influence campaigns in Moldova. Ahead of important European elections, EU and NATO agencies are keeping an eye on the situation despite Hungary and Russia denying any involvement.
