North Carolina election official Bob Rucho resigned March 5, 2026, after breaking ethics rules, prompting a replacement amid a tight Senate race.
Bob Rucho, a North Carolina State Board of Elections member, resigned on March 5, 2026, after violating state law by donating to sheriff candidates and publicly supporting Senate leader Phil Berger.
State Auditor Dave Boliek, who appointed Rucho, confirmed the resignation was mutual and appointed Angela Hawkins, Wake County’s elections chair, to replace him.
The move comes amid a tight Republican primary race in Senate District 26, where challenger Sam Page leads Berger by two votes, with provisional ballots still being counted.
A recount may be requested if the margin is under one percentage point.
Boliek, a Berger ally, faces calls to recuse himself, though his office says it has no role in ballot counting.
The board insists the election process remains secure and impartial.
