Kerala court reviews former minister Antony Raju’s appeal against 2026 conviction for evidence tampering in a 1990 drug case.
The Kerala High Court is reviewing former Transport Minister Antony Raju’s appeal to suspend his 2026 conviction for allegedly tampering with evidence in a 1990 drug case involving an Australian national.
Raju, a key figure in the Left Democratic Front, argues the conviction, which disqualified him from contesting the upcoming Assembly elections, is unjust due to a 35-year delay, flawed legal reasoning, and lack of proof of intent.
The state opposes the appeal, asserting that suspending the conviction would undermine electoral integrity and that disqualification under the Representation of the People Act is automatic and statutory.
The court questioned whether Raju, as a junior lawyer, had the necessary intent and whether his senior colleague was aware of the alleged tampering.
The court reserved its verdict after hearing arguments from both sides.
