Karnataka enacts Rohith Vemula Act to ban caste discrimination in universities, backed by education reforms and Rs 2,500 crore ADB project.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the enactment of the Rohith Vemula Act, a law to prevent caste-based discrimination in all universities across the state, following a 2023 recommendation from Rahul Gandhi.
The bill, under review after a February cabinet meeting, aims to protect marginalized students and ensure safe academic environments.
As part of broader education reforms, the state will reinstate student union elections, upgrade 40 First Grade Colleges and 11 polytechnics with a Rs 2,500 crore ADB-backed project, and introduce new courses in AI, machine learning, and automation.
The government will fill 2,000 teaching posts, establish new colleges, and provide 90 days of maternity leave for female guest lecturers.
Infrastructure upgrades and new medical facilities, including cancer centers and trauma care units, are also included in the budget.
