Edward Evbagharu, a 46-year-old Irish security guard, was sentenced to two years in prison with the final year suspended after pleading guilty to money laundering in a €49,188 romance scam.
The French victim was tricked into sending funds over six months through an online fraud involving a fake Saudi refugee.
About €31,000 passed through Evbagharu’s accounts, controlled by two co-accused.
He claimed ignorance and helped a friend without a bank account, but investigators found no proof.
The victim suffered severe mental and physical health issues and now relies on state support.
Though Evbagharu had no direct financial gain and a clean record since the crime, the judge cited his 11 prior convictions and the scam’s complexity, emphasizing the seriousness of facilitating financial crime.
