India aims to attract 1.3 million foreign students by 2047 to balance its education export gap.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said on March 6, 2026, that India’s education sector could become a major export driver, with the goal of attracting 1.3 million international students by 2047 to reduce the current imbalance where 28 Indian students study abroad for every foreign student in India.
Speaking at a conclave on internationalizing higher education, he highlighted the National Education Policy 2020, free trade agreements with developed economies, and innovative programs like three-year dual-degree models with a year in India to boost global engagement.
Goyal urged universities to modernize curricula, retrain faculty, and align education with global trends to position Indian institutions as competitive providers of high-quality, internationally recognized education.
