Hong Kong completed its first green methanol bunkering, a milestone in its green shipping ambitions.
On March 5, 2026, Hong Kong completed its first green methanol bunkering operation, marking a milestone in its push to become a global green marine fuel hub.
The world’s first methanol dual-fuel roll-on/roll-off vessel, CM HONG KONG, received about 500 tonnes of green methanol via ship-to-ship transfer at anchor, making it China’s first such operation.
The fuel, produced by CIMC Enric and certified by ISCC EU, was supplied through Sinopec (Hong Kong)’s network and used by shipowner CMES, forming a full closed-loop green methanol value chain.
The event, attended by government and industry leaders, demonstrated the technical and commercial viability of green methanol bunkering, with emissions reductions estimated at up to 85% compared to traditional fuels.
The operation supports Hong Kong’s goal of 7% green fuel usage by 2030 and strengthens collaboration among government, shipping, energy, and manufacturing sectors.
