Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been posthumously awarded Bangladesh’s highest civilian honor, the Independence Award 2026, for her contributions to independence, democracy, women’s education, and nation-building.
She is one of 15 individuals and five institutions recognized by the Cabinet Division.
Other posthumous recipients include Major Mohammad Abdul Jalil, Dr. Ashraf Siddiqui, Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, and Kazi Fazlur Rahman.
Living recipients include Hanif Sanket, Jobera Rahman Linu, and Abdul Mukit Majumdar.
Institutions honored include Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Faujdarhat Cadet College, and Gonoshasthaya Kendra.
The awards were announced on March 5, 2026.
