A Dayton mother was sentenced to five years in prison for her role in the months-long abuse of her two children, who were found severely injured after escaping a filthy room.
Kayla Shepherd, 30, of Dayton, was sentenced to five years in prison for her role in the severe abuse of her two children, a 9-year-old girl and 8-year-old boy, who were confined in a filthy room for months starting in June 2024.
The children, found wandering the street in November 2024 with severe injuries including burns, fractures, and sexual trauma, escaped after enduring prolonged physical and psychological abuse by Shepherd’s boyfriend, Kyle Knox.
Knox, who pleaded guilty to over 100 counts including aggravated arson and endangering children, received a 40 to 45.5-year sentence.
Shepherd admitted she knew of the abuse but claimed she never heard cries or screams, and prosecutors said she failed to protect her children despite awareness.
Both children are now safe and receiving care.
