Canada approves NexGen’s Rook I uranium project in Saskatchewan, paving way for construction and potential global supply impact.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has approved NexGen Energy’s Rook I uranium mine and mill in Saskatchewan, allowing construction to begin this summer.
The project, expected to take four years and cost $2.2 billion, could produce up to 30 million pounds of uranium annually—about 20% of global supply—and create 459 full-time jobs.
Located in Treaty 10 territory, it has support from several Indigenous groups through benefit agreements.
The mine is part of a broader uranium expansion in Saskatchewan, where mining supports over 2,300 jobs, nearly half held by northern residents.
NexGen must still apply for an operating licence before production.
