Andrew Agwu, 25, of Dundalk, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary for stealing five pairs of shoes from two Dublin Foot Locker stores during riots on November 23, 2023, sparked by an anti-immigration protest at the Garden of Remembrance.
The unrest caused widespread disruption, injured 13 gardaí and five civilians, and damaged vehicles.
Agwu, who claimed he couldn’t return home due to transit issues, entered the stores via back doors, took boxes of shoes, and later admitted his actions were due to “stupidity.” Though he has no prior record, the €750 in stolen shoes were not recovered.
He offered €2,500 in restitution, expressed remorse, and was granted bail.
Sentencing was adjourned to May 21, 2026.
One store employee said she still feels unsafe.
