U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has demanded that Dunkin’ and Starbucks provide safety data for ingredients in their sugary beverages, challenging the FDA’s Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) designation for sweeteners and starches.
The move, part of his "Make America Healthy Again" initiative, follows a petition by former FDA commissioner David Kessler calling for companies to prove ingredient safety.
The announcement coincided with new federal dietary guidelines urging Americans to limit processed foods and added sugars.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey mocked the request with a satirical social media post.
Dunkin’ and the Department of Health and Human Services did not comment.
