The U.S. Coast Guard will build a training center at the former Birmingham-Southern College campus to boost readiness and jobs.
The U.S. Coast Guard has chosen the 192-acre former Birmingham-Southern College campus in Alabama as the site for a new national training center, following a nationwide search to support its Force Design 2028 strategy and growing recruitment needs.
The facility will house up to 1,200 recruits and 400 staff, featuring classrooms, a medical center, dining and recreation facilities, and proximity to an airport.
The acquisition, praised by federal and state leaders, aims to boost Coast Guard readiness, create hundreds of jobs, and revitalize the campus, which closed in May 2024.
