Two Irish women jailed for disrupting court over teacher’s pronoun dispute.
Martina Burke and Ammi Burke, the mother and sister of teacher Enoch Burke, were both given two weeks in jail by an Irish High Court judge for contempt of court after they shouted during hearings.
After they failed to show up for the ruling, the judge, Brian Cregan, ordered their immediate arrest and denounced their persistent disobedience of the court's authority, calling their behavior a "family circus" and "completely abnormal."
The women and Enoch's brother Isaac were prohibited from physically attending any further hearings and are now required to participate virtually.
The case is related to Enoch Burke's disagreement with Wilson's Hospital School in 2022 over the use of a student's new name and pronouns, which he declined due to his religious beliefs.
The judge urged Enoch to put an end to his legal defiance in order to secure his release, emphasizing that all citizens must uphold the rule of law.
