Türkiye rejects moves to militarize Aegean islands, calling them illegal and destabilizing.
Türkiye has condemned recent efforts to challenge the demilitarized status of Aegean islands, asserting the move violates the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne and 1947 Paris Peace Treaty.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Öncü Keçeli called the actions "unserious, unfortunate, and ill-timed," accusing certain actors of trying to create a fait accompli and destabilize relations with Greece, a NATO ally.
Türkiye reiterated that the islands’ legal status is settled and any violations of international law would be null and void.
It also emphasized its role in securing Turkish Cypriots and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, rejecting claims of revisionism amid heightened regional tensions.
