South West Water admitted causing a 2024 water contamination in Brixham, sickening 140, leading to a 54-day boil-water order.
South West Water Ltd has pleaded guilty to supplying water unfit for human consumption after a 2024 cryptosporidium outbreak in Brixham, Devon, which sickened at least 140 people, hospitalized four, and triggered a 54-day boil-water notice affecting around 17,000 homes and businesses.
The company admitted fault at Exeter Magistrates’ Court under the Water Industry Act 1991, citing a damaged air valve as the likely cause.
The incident prompted widespread health concerns, economic disruption, and criticism over corporate accountability, with the Drinking Water Inspectorate calling it a serious failure that damaged public trust.
The firm, owned by Pennon, faces a fine and has already spent nearly £40 million on remediation and service improvements.
Sentencing is scheduled for June 2.
