Nigeria sends delegation to honor Rev. Jesse Jackson’s funeral in U.S., recognizing his anti-apartheid legacy.
Nigeria has sent a five-member delegation, led by Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, to attend the burial rites of American civil rights leader Rev.
Jesse Jackson, who died on February 17, 2026, in Chicago at age 84.
The group includes senior government officials and will represent President Bola Tinubu at memorial events in Chicago, South Carolina, and Washington, D.C., including a lying-in-state and a public “People’s Celebration” on March 6, with a private homegoing service on March 7.
President Tinubu honored Jackson as a great friend of Nigeria and Africa, recognizing his key role in opposing apartheid, advocating for Nelson Mandela’s release, and pushing for international sanctions against South Africa’s apartheid regime.
