Indian economist Krishnamurthy Subramanian wins University of Chicago’s top alumni award, first Indian recipient, for economic leadership and pandemic analysis.
Indian economist Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian has become the first Indian to receive the University of Chicago’s Alumni Award for Professional Achievement, honoring his tenure as India’s Chief Economic Adviser (2018–2021) and his influential work on the country’s Economic Surveys.
The award recognized his role in shaping India’s economic strategy centered on market competition, policy autonomy, and inclusive growth, as well as his early analysis of the COVID-19 crisis as a supply-side shock and his prediction of a V-shaped recovery.
Subramanian, who also served at the IMF and teaches at the Indian School of Business, holds degrees from IIT Kanpur, IIM Calcutta, and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
He is the first Indian economist to receive the honor in the award’s 85-year history.
