India launches its first fully digital census in 2026, using digital tools and online self-enumeration.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has launched digital tools and mascots Pragati and Vikas for India’s 2027 census, the first fully digital census.
Set to begin April 1, 2026, it will run in two phases: house-listing and housing (April–September 2026), followed by population enumeration in February 2027.
A new digital platform, CMMS, will coordinate operations using handheld devices, geotagged mapping, and real-time data.
Over 3.2 million officials will collect data, with citizens able to self-enumerate online in 16 languages.
The census, delayed from 2021, includes 33 questions in the first phase and aims for greater accuracy and efficiency.
