The IAEA approved safeguards for Pakistan’s Chashma Unit 5 nuclear reactor, ensuring its use for peaceful purposes.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has approved safeguards for Chashma Unit 5, a 1,200-megawatt nuclear reactor in Pakistan, confirming the plant will use nuclear materials only for peaceful purposes.
The agreement, approved unanimously by the IAEA Board of Governors, supports Pakistan’s energy security and climate goals, as the country aims to expand low-carbon electricity.
Unit 5, expected to begin operations by 2030, is part of Pakistan’s growing nuclear fleet, which currently supplies 18.3% of its electricity and 34% of its low-carbon power.
The approval follows high-level diplomatic engagement, including a visit by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Vienna, where Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to nuclear non-proliferation and signed a collaboration agreement with the IAEA.
