Bulgaria is launching its new "Smartron" electric locomotive, named Vasil Levski, into service tomorrow with a top speed of 160 km/h.
The final unit in a 2021 contract with the DZZD "Siemens Tron" consortium, it is part of ten modern, energy-efficient locomotives designed to reduce operating costs and improve reliability.
The delivery brings BDZ’s total Smartron fleet to 25, with six units allocated to private operators.
The rollout supports broader modernization efforts, including upcoming multiple-unit trains under the Recovery and Sustainability Plan, aimed at easing rolling stock shortages and service disruptions.
