Bruce Johnston, 83, is retiring from full-time Beach Boys touring to focus on songwriting and speaking, with Chris Cron taking over on tour.
Bruce Johnston, 83, has announced he is stepping down from full-time touring with The Beach Boys after more than six decades, citing a focus on songwriting and studio work as the start of “Part Three” of his career.
He will continue performing at select events, including the band’s July 3 and 4 Hollywood Bowl shows, and plans to pursue speaking engagements.
Johnston, who joined in 1965 and returned in 1978 after a brief departure, contributed vocals, songwriting, and keyboard work to numerous albums.
Mike Love, the band’s only remaining original member, praised Johnston’s talents and affirmed the change marks a new chapter, not an end, for the group.
Chris Cron will replace Johnston on tour.
